Where is Microsoft???

M

mwulfe

It all started when I could not get my Media Center working under
Vista. It would start for about 15 seconds, then vade, then a message
would appear saying "Windows Media Center Has Stopped Working" etc.
When I checked the Media Center news group, I noticed that similar
messages have been posted for severak months.

Lately I have also experienced another problem, with Movie Maker
version 6.0: it crashes when publishing some movies, and I cannot
detect any particular pattern in the failures (size of clips, format,
numbers of clips, use of special effects, etc.).

The problems seem to be across all sorts of systems, including
commercial desktops and notebooks, and home-made models like my own.

Clearly MS knows about these issues. There was even a hotfix for the
Media Center, but when I tried to run it I got a message saying that
it did not apply to my system. So far there is no solution that
broadly addresses the problems.

Why hasn't MS issued an update or service pack that solves these
problems??

Where Do You Think They Are? The Answer Is Quite Simple: They Are
Hiding In Their Private Windows Vista Service Pack One Beta News Group,
They Usually Refuse To Come Out And Play In The Windows Vista Public
News Groups, God Forbid The Fact That They Might Actually Learn What Is
Wrong With Their Flawed Windows Vista RTM Operating System In The First
Place, Just FYI.

What's the fault data for the Movie Maker crash--
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
?

"It does not apply to your system" is actually a generic response from the
package if you already have that or a newer version on your system. I've
passed along the suggestion that that message is confusing.

No, I have not expected anything to go "poof" to make it better, and I
was not trying to provide a forum for Microsoft abuse (there's plenty
of opportunity for that). I WAS looking for real, official
recognition from MS that there is a problem and that they are at least
planning to do something about it.

Never happen in this Microsoft butt kissers club. Notice the comical
rare MS employee that rarely posts and their laughable disclaimer when
they do that Microsoft forces them to always include?

Officially Microsoft NEVER has and never will make any comments here
or in any microsoft.public... newsgroup.

That's Why Every One Here Should Switch To Linux, There (In The Linux
Forums) They Actually Have Technical Support Moderator's Who Help People
Out Instead Of Just Monitoring Posts For Abuse And Passing Off The
Technical Support Aspect To People Who Call Themselves MVP's, Just FYI.

Well just FYI, those people did not call themselves MVP's. They were called
that by thier peers and Microsoft. Furthermore I see that some of the best
are working in this group now. Being an MVP means that you put in a lot of
time trying to help other people (that is the purpose of support groups) and
that often comes at huge personal sacrifice. These people are volunteers
doing thier best to help out and people should be gratefull for that instead
of posting ridiculous commentary. These dedicated people are not here to
act as your personal whipping posts.

As for you kevpan815 I think you are a self-appointed S*** Disturber just
like you always have been. A puppy trying to bark at the world. You would
also blame Microsoft if any of the following happened....

Ubuntu crashed.
The Russian government failed.
The sun rose.
The sun didn't rise.
Mary Poppins had a crash landing.
The sun set.
The sun didn't set.

Instead of just wasting your time disgusting people why don't you spend that
time trying to find yourself a life. You might even end up providing just
cause for all the valuable oxygen you've been using up. The person most
disgusted with you, is you (It shows in your posts) but I'm running a close
second. You remind me of this

I wasn't offering any Poofs. I'm honestly trying to understand what you're
running into. If you could please provide me the fault data for the Movie
Maker crash--
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
, I would like to take a look at that data and see if I can determine
anything useful.

Cheers,

My "poof" remark was addressed to another response, from Mick Murphy,
not to you.

Here's the data on the MM crash. Let me know if there is anything
else I can tell you to help solve the problem::

This is a strange request, but could you cause this to crash more and make
sure to send the crash data in via that Problem Reports and Solutions Center
tool? Right now there's not enough data to go on. =\

Yes, it's a strange request, but happy to oblige. I hope all this

Crashes in Movie Maker and Media Player are probably the ones I can be most
helpful with. That being said:

Is Divx.dll on the system? What version is it, if so? The current version
from DivX.com is 6.7 .

Is mcdvd_32.dll on the system? That's a MainConcept decoder....

What other multimedia system is on the system? It looks like there's
potentially some old third party multimedia codecs on the box. There
current versions should be more reliable. =\

Crashes in Movie Maker and Media Player are probably the ones I can be
most helpful with. That being said:

I can't get xvid ffmpg . avi to play at 2000 bits on mp11,
only shows sound, was work fine on mp10.
It tries to download codec then only plays sound. grr, heh

have to use vlc and vistacodecs to get it going,
some trouble also with a few dvd codecs where
only a dvd or vlc will run the dvd video container
as in custom player wrappers for game/movie.

possible when calls to wmp to cover sound/video
in game mp3 doesn't kick in... a .cpp I think.

thx

Downloading and installing DivX 6.7 did the trick for Movie Maker!
Three stars for that one, amigo, thanks!

Media Center, however, is still crashing. I did find mcdvd_32.dll in
the Windows\System32 folder, dated 2/27/2007, 255k. so I suppose
that's not the problem.

I seem to remember downloading and installing some codecs when I first
installed Vista, but I don't remember what they were. How do I know
which ones I need and which ones I should trash? And what's the best
way to remove unwanted codecs? Could these be causing the problem
with Media Center?
