Windows Resource kit says there is a program/utility to save and then restore
the MBR. I can't find that utility tool, even though i have Windows Support
Tools installed.

where is it?

This may refresh your memory.. On the windows cd as described below, look in
the support cab file, you should be able to extract the files you want from
there using the following dir path C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Windows Support Tools .. Extracting the files is easier..

Or reinstall..
The following tools install when the Complete checkbox is selected during
setup. However, the Help for these tools contains the Windows 2000 version
and is not included in Suptools.chm. The help for these tools can be launched
from the help menu option of the tools or it can also be launched from the
command line by typing the help file name directly.

Apimon.exe -- Apimon.hlp
Dskprobe.exe -- Dskprobe.hlp
Windiff.exe -- Windiff.hlp

To install Windows Support Tools
Insert the Windows CD into your CD-ROM drive.
Click No if you are prompted to reinstall Windows.
When the Welcome screen appears, click Browse this CD.
Go to the \Support\Tools folder.
For complete setup information, refer to the Readme.doc file in this folder.
Double-click Setup.exe.
Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

Hope this can help

You may not have selected the complete check box option...?
The files you need are in the support cabinet file, all you really need to
do is extract them to your C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Windows Support Tools folder and "WALLAH" your done..
If you run setup, you will have to uninstall to reinstall.. Your call..
Good night..
