Where is "compact all folders"?

M

Mickey Segal

I can't find the "compact all folders" menu command that was present in
Outlook Express. "Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance" has a setting
to "Compact the database on shutdown every" [setting] runs, but I don't see
how to invoke this when you want it done, other than changing [setting] to 1
and then changing back to 999.

That's the ball game now!

An alternative to 999 is deselection.

I agree that "compact all folders" was not easy to find in Outlook Express,
but the logical thing to do would have been to put a "Compact now" button
into "Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance".

The default setting is 100.

You should compact regularly or you are heading for problems.
999 is too great a margin between maintenance of the data base IMHO.

I've used the utility available from here www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/ It worked
fine for me.

All the guy is saying is he wants to be in control. Another option
is to uncheck the feature.

Logic and Microsoft do not always go together!

In past years I've been amazed by how many of my suggestions Microsoft has
implemented, including major ones. It takes more effort to make the system
work that well once the founders are out of the picture.

The logic is that most users don't want to be bothered by the
nitty-gritty machinery. They prefer to have compaction done
automatically without user intervention.

That makes sense for file defragmentation, which runs in the background and
doesn't interfere with work, but it doesn't make sense for compacting mail
files, which slows the system down significantly. I suppose this may be
less an issue on dual core machines, but on single core machines it is a
problem, and lots of computers, particularly mobile ones, run on single core
chips.

Gary VanderMolen

If I'm not mistaken, when compaction is due, Windows Mail
offers to do it upon exit. It takes only 30-60 seconds.

Gary VanderMolen

Compression is triggered on exiting Windows Mail, but it can take minutes
depending on the number of messages and the speed of the system. During
this time, system responsiveness is very impaired, to the point that I only
do the compression when planning to go off and do something else that
doesn't require using the computer.

If you have a dual core CPU and 500 messages in Windows Mail the delay is
negligible, but if you are using a mobile computer optimized around battery
life and have years of messages the pushy compression is a bother. At least
with Vista one can turn compression off, but one also wants to evoke
compression when convenient since presumably it serves an important purpose.

It seems as if the engineers at Microsoft use Outlook, and few care about
Windows Mail. That would also explain the design flaws in the Contacts
folder.

Compaction not compression!

The database to be compacted is not the same as with OE6 and so it
is not so large a task as it was.

Noone at Microsoft except the OE/Winmail testing team has probably even seen
OE.

The same bugs injected in OE V4 (you know Bill gets the internet) are
bizzare. One can't paste bitmaps - you know those things that icons,
cursors, toolbar buttons, and some pictures are made from. Windows basic
data structure. Now it's 11 years later.
