Where have my contacts and emails gone ?

I was trying to configure a new Anti-Virus program and in the process all my
Outlook emails, personal folders and Address Book contacts have vanished. I
know there are somewhere, but am not at all sure how to retreive them.

Provide some more detail. Can you open Outlook at all? When you do, do you
get any error messages about your data file?
The file you need to look for is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's
where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored. PST files are hidden
files.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q168/6/44.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q181/0/14.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q184/8/17.asp

Thanks. You gave me the information I needed. I went to Open/data file
and there were all the items (.pst files ) I had lost, and in opening them
they are now back in situ.

There has been no problem opening Outlook, but now there is a new set of
blank Personal Folders, and I suppose that it is through these new ones that
the new mail now comes in. I must have imported the files into my
anti-virus program and they removed themselves from Outlook.

Thanks for the links. I seem to be in a slightly different situation from
that information, as this happened by accident. Is there any way I can have
just one set of .pst files and folders ? There are three sets now, as this
happened once before when I thought Outlook needed repair and everything
disappeared then also. I am not sure what I can safely delete without
messing up the whole program.

It's hard to imagine how any antivirus program did this. What most likley
has happenend is that you have created new Outlook profiles along the way.
Each time you do, Outlook creates a new, empty PST file. The other PST files
remain on your hard drive and can be opened and used instead of a new empty
one. You can open any of your old PST files, set them as the default folder
for Outlook, restart Outlook, then close the new, empty PST file.

In Outlook I have three Personal folders. I would prefer to have the one I
most recently created ( deliberately ) to be the mail delivery one and remove
the one which is empty, which I created accidentally. If I go to File/Data
Management they all come up, but the empty one is the 'mail delivery
location'. If I remove, or archive that what happens ?

You can close any Personal Folders file that is not your default. That
disconnects the file from the Outlook profile, but does not delete it from
your hard drive. If it contains any information you might want, just copy it
into your current default before you close it. If you also want to delete

Archiving is simply moving information from your default Personal Folders

folder there is empty although it is correctly showing with nothing missing
in the main Outlook window.

Whenever you change your default Contacts Folder you must remember to tell
the Outlook Address Book Service what you did. It is deeply dumb. It cannot
keep track of the changes you made. I hope Outlook's developers are
embarassed by that. I am.
It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to “lose track†of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset the connection,
depending on your Outlook version. Note that in some instances you may
actually have to remove the Outlook Address Book completely from your
Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

has happenend is that you have created new Outlook profiles along the
way.
Each time you do, Outlook creates a new, empty PST file. The other
PST files
remain on your hard drive and can be opened and used instead of a new
empty
one. You can open any of your old PST files, set them as the default
folder
for Outlook, restart Outlook, then close the new, empty PST file.

Thanks. You gave me the information I needed. I went to
Open/data file
and there were all the items (.pst files ) I had lost, and in
opening them
they are now back in situ.

There has been no problem opening Outlook, but now there is a new
set of
blank Personal Folders, and I suppose that it is through these new
ones
that
the new mail now comes in. I must have imported the files into my
anti-virus program and they removed themselves from Outlook.

Thanks for the links. I seem to be in a slightly different
situation
from
that information, as this happened by accident. Is there any way
I can
have
just one set of .pst files and folders ? There are three sets now,
as
this
happened once before when I thought Outlook needed repair and
everything
disappeared then also. I am not sure what I can safely delete
without
messing up the whole program.

:

Provide some more detail. Can you open Outlook at all? When you
do, do
you
get any error messages about your data file?
The file you need to look for is your Personal Folders file
(*.pst) It's
where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored. PST files
are
hidden
files.

Examine the properties of these subfolders. Are they in fact enabled as

All the folders are showing up from the To: box now...I must have fiddled
with something. I think it was in Control Panel/Mail. In 'General' it had
said 'when starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile: and the profile was
Ooutlook Express. I changed it to Outlook. I now have a problem that Mail
Washer is not responding to Outlook Express. It was before I fiddled...but
that is probably another issue.
