Where do downloaded templates end up??

J

Jonathan

Hi there,
[PP 2003]

I downloaded a number of templates off the Office website.
During the first download there was a note that said something like, "When
you download a template it will open a new PP presentation with the new
template applied. To use the template on an existing presentation close
powerpoint and open it again and then apply the template" (that very last
bit I must admit I am not sure on).

I have downloaded about 6 templats but they do not appear in the Design
Templates task bar.
Where do they end up? How to I retrieve them and use them?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi there,
Okay... further to this post...

I did a search for all .pot files on C:
I have found that the templates I downloaded in PP have ended up in :
C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

So... at least they are somewhere on my computer.
But how to I access them from within PP2003?

Currently I click NEW on the file menu.
This brings up the NEW PRESENTATION bar.
I then select FROM DESIGN TEMPLATE.... and this shows me the ones that have
always been there... none of the new ones.

The other option is I select ON MY COMPUTER and this brings up a list of
other templates (I think they are ones I installed from the PP TEMPLATE PACK
1).

Nothing points to the folder where the ONLINE templates got deposited to.
Of course, I can cut and paste them all to a fold that PP is looking in for
the above to options but surely that's not considered normal procedure?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Jonathan,

This page explains where to find out where you templates are normally
stored.

Once you find out where your normal powerpoint/office templates are
stored....there is no harm cut and pasting the newly downloaded one to the
same place.

Design Templates are controlled a bit differently in PowerPoint 2003 than in
prior versions. The list of design templates seems to be "fixed" to what
ships with PowerPoint 2003. It appears that all newly created or collected
templates should go in C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates and when you want something other than the "shipped
templates", click on Templates > On my computer. I suspect that this change
might be related to the color sort that they added at the last minute. Read
on.

My suggestion would be to create two new folders with names of your choice.
Mine are: C:\Documents and Settings\Sonia\Application
Data\Microsoft\Downloaded Templates and C:\Documents and
Settings\Sonia\Application Data\Microsoft\Sonia's Templates. Use those to
collect those that you download from other sources and any new templates you
create or customize. The tabs shown when you click on "On my computer"
will then be "Downloaded Templates" and "Your Templates".

The Design Templates are stored in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
2003\Templates\Presentation Designs (the path on your system may differ,
depending on where you installed Office 2003).

There is a one very strong reason for wanting to add to the list of Design
Templates. These templates offer an additional option, i.e. "Use for All
New Presentations". However, PowerPoint 2003 seems to have a fixed list of
template files that it will display as Design Templates. I can't find
anything in the Registry that controls this list, so there may be an
encrypted list buried someplace we aren't supposed to find. The following
templates will be displayed, if they exist. If any new ones are added to
the Templates folder, they will not be displayed. If any are deleted, it
simply displays what it finds:

Axis.pot Layers.pot
Balance.pot Level.pot
Balloons.pot Maple.pot
Beam.pot Mountain Top.pot
Blends.pot Network.pot
Capsules.pot Ocean.pot
Cascade.pot Orbit.pot
Cliff.pot Pixel.pot
Clouds.pot Profile.pot
Compass.pot Proposal.pot
Competition.pot Quadrant.pot
Crayons.pot Radial.pot
Curtain Call.pot Refined.pot
Digital Dots.pot Ripple.pot
Echo.pot Satellite Dish.pot
Eclipse.pot Shimmer.pot
Edge.pot Slit.pot
Fading Grid.pot Stream.pot
Fireworks.pot Studio.pot
Glass Layers.pot Teamwork.pot
Globe.pot Textured.pot
Kimono.pot Watermark.pot

If you are willing to give up one of them and use its name, you can save a
template of your choice to the folder. For example, I have a template that
I have created and am using to create a series of tutorials. I know that I
will never have use for the Balloons.pot template, so I have saved my custom
template as C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2003\Templates\Presentation
Designs\Balloons.pot. I have also used the option "Use for all new
Presentations", so each time I open PowerPoint 2003, a new blank
presentation appears, but with my template applied. Very handy, especially
if you want to enforce a standard template within an organization. The
downside is that I have to live with the file name - - Balloons.pot - -
which in no way describes my template. <G> Yes, I tried to give it a name
of my choice and PowerPoint 2003 would not display it in the list of design
templates. However, if I delete the original Balloons.pot and then save
mine as C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2003\Templates\Presentation
Designs\Balloons.pot, it shows up in the list.

Now, maybe someone else can figure out how to override the default.pot that
is used in PowerPoint 2003. So far I've made no headway there.

Maybe Microsoft will share with us how we can add new templates to the list,
or maybe they will tell us that Bill wants it this way and wants control
over our default template.

Sonia,
Any chance you would be willing to put this up as an article/tutorial on
your site. I have been messing around with trying to get my templates into
the list and couldn't get it to work. I thought it was just brain fuzz from
too much travel and activity and too little sleep. Reading this let me know
that it wasn't just me.

(It is so good to be home. I just wish my voice would decide to join me!)

I was thinking of doing just that, so you've nudged me into it. I'll need
to do some work on it to add the graphics and reduce the text. People who
need to read don't like to read. <G>

I think I may have sorted this out...
A year or two ago I set my TEMPLATES folder to be a shared folder elsewhere
on my computer... Not the default one.
I see that PP is downloading the templates into the default one. Yet it can
not access them because Office it not set to look there for templates.
I guess the key is to get PP to download them to the templates folder that
it is set to LOOK in for templates... Rather than it downloading them to one
place and looking for them in another place.

Yes, that's where my previous method (that TAJ pointed you to) works. The
expanded information is really to take advantage of the great new setting
that allows you to specify the default template. Your question nudged me to
take a really close look at that and now I've gained a great tool. That's
what we call win/win for everyone. <G>
