If you think you have damaged files then I would strongly suggest that you
first repair/reinstall your original XP SP1 before trying to install SP2.
That may be why you are having problems with the SP2 upgrade, as you have
missing or damaged files needed for the install.
Follow the information below to repair XP, afterwards, go to the Windows
Update, have it scan your machine for necessary updates and install them.
Then you can install the SP2.

Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.
