Where can I get a Dot-Matrix???

Hi,

I currently have an old 486 which I'm using to write DOS programs on.

Anyway, I need a Dot-Matrix printer so I can print out the source code
on the Z-folded paper.

Everytime I look on eBay, I see them for hundreds of pounds - but can
someone please tell me where I can buy a used one for around £15?

Thanks!

Hundreds ?? Wow ! I should put mine on ebay !!

of pounds -

So you are in the UK then ? (Always a handy detail to include in 'where
can I get a ______' posts !)

but can

If you are anywhere near Derbyshire or near places I travel to, you can
probably get one out of my Garage !

So where are you based ?

Cheers, J/.

In this part of the world DM printers are usually found
1. in charity shops operated by the Salvation Army
and similar organizations
2. in one-man computer stores (as distinct from
branches of chains.)
3. at private sales of computer apparatus
organized by local computing clubs (twice a
year in Ottawa.)

Your main considerations may be:
i: availability of printer drivers for your DOS software
ii: availability of DM printer ribbons.

I have a couple in my garage as well. I'm surprised to find at lot of them
still in use
and there are still new ones being produced. One that comes to mind is the
Okidata
ML320. They are mostly used for POS. I've seen them at car dealers, hardware
stores
and until recently my pharmacist was using one to print labels. They do have
the
advantage of being cost efficient.

And being able to print labels less than an A4 sheet at a time !

actually, do you fancy giving me details, like printer model, possibly
a picture, etc. and give me a price?

You can send it as a "small parcel" fairly cheaply up to Ayrshire, and
I can pay you via PayPal or Nochex!

My email address is (e-mail address removed) :)

Have a Happy New Year anyway!

Multi-form parts are used in a lot of instances. Have you visited your car
dealer lately?
I used to think if you need muliple copies just set the laser to that number
but just look at the cost of printing. My car dealer was using Lexmark and
the hardware store was using ML320s. Most of the POS printers use the serial
port which is not available on most new lasers or inkjets.

Printing costs can still be lower with a laser. An impact printer's
ribbon and multi-part tractor feed paper can be very expensive on a
per-page basis.
