Where can I download IE 6.0?

D

Dr.Art

I am running Windows XP with IE 6.0. I suspect a problem with IE, so I need
to uninstall and reinstall....the problem is that Best Buy did not provide
Windows XP disks with this system, only some goofy restore CDs. Is there a
site where I can download IE?

Thanks.

IE6 is part and parcel of WinXP, Art. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378.

Note that if your problem is caused by hijackware, reinstalling IE won't
help: Hijackware infects Windows. What you experience using IE is merely a
symptom of the disease.

I have been to the www.microsoft.com/windows/ie site and don't see where I
can download IE. All I see is SP2 download for XP, which I already have.

I'm told by Tech Guy Support Forum that a solution to my Microsoft Visual
C++ Runtime Library error problem might be to uninstall and reinstall
IE.....but I don't know how to 1) uninstall it, or 2) where to find it to
download and reinstall it. Because of the restore CDs I have and Best Buy's
inability to provide online or telephone support for their VPR Matrix
computers, I am at a loss.

Thanks. I have been in communication with Tech Guy Forum and have run Hijack
This. The logfile was scrutinized and a couple of entries were
repaired/deleted. I am told that the Hijack This logfile is clean now, but
the problem persists of Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error appearing
whenever I bring up IE or Outlook Express. What I am trying to do now is
clean IE out of the system and reinstall it.....but I am unsure of what to
do.

Thanks for your help.

To check for corrupted or missing files - click Start>Run and type in "sfc
/scannow" (no quotes) and be sure
to have your Windows XP disk handy. This will repair and re-register any
existing problems.

Also, be sure to run Ad-Aware and Spybot scans in SafeMode

or try this link

I think you are right about it not being an IE or Outlook Express problem.
The "error" occurred this afternoon when neither of those programs were
running.
The error is not a true error message, but here is what appears in the
toolbar, beside the Start key, at the bottom of the screen (where, e.g., an
open program would be listed)....."Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"
(without quotation marks).

I ran the "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) and was instructed to insert the
Windows XP CD -- of course, I do not have this since Best Buy only provided
Restore CDs with this system. I am trying to borrow the necessary CD now,
but no luck yet.

Here are the links to the Tech Guy issues and responses. The first is for

sfc /scannow, the only option I have is to insert the Windows XP Home CD.
There is not option to browse to I386 or any other folder. Choices are:
Retry, More Information (tell me to insert CD), or Cancel.

What preceded this problem, Art? Were IE browser and Search 'hijacked'?
Sure looks like it from your HT log in
http://forums.techguy.org/t339713.html.

Can you connect to the internet at all?

Your posts in the later thread http://forums.techguy.org/t340182.html
indicate that you found 'CommonName' and deleted it. See
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx? and
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/CommonName.htmlid=453072513, though at this
point we don't know what variant you have/had. Where did you find it and
what did you delete? Is CommonName (still) found in Add/Remove Programs?

I take except with Cybertech's "all clear" report on your last posted log in
http://forums.techguy.org/t339713.html, especially given the 'CommonName'
issue in your later thread. He missed several entries.

1. Close all browser and messenger windows/applications and have HT fix:

2. Now "flush" (disable and then re-enable) System Restore
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039).

3. If the problem persists, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339),
reboot into Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
and scan with HT. Save the new log, reboot into Windows and post the new
log to your thread at http://forums.techguy.org/t339713.html, asking for it
to be reviewed further. In your post, you may reference our thread here in
this newsgroup by citing this link: http://snipurl.com/dg8d.

Again, reinstalling IE or OE won't help: Windows is what was and is still
infected.

Good luck.

Dr.Art

OK. I'll try to answer all your questions.

1)A year or so ago, I would occasionally get the entry in the toolbar
(beside the Start menu) saying "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library". That
is the same message I get now, except that in the past it would only show up
once in a while, like a couple of time a month. I would also occasionally
get a "Hotkey" entry, but they would not come at the same time and the
Hotkey message would be much more infrequent.
I am not aware of IE browser or Search being hijacked. I used to run Spybot
every now and then, but don't remember anything critical about IE or Search.
I have started using Spy Sweeper in the past 2 months.

2) Yes. I can connect to the internet with no problem. In fact, I would be
willing to let the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library message stay on the
page except for one problem.....when it appears, it blocks Norton Antivirus
LiveUpdate from running and I cannot get the automatic virus definition
updates. I have to close the Microsoft Visual, etc. "program", then run
liveupdate quickly before the Microsoft Visual, etc. culprit reappears.

3) Re: the CommonName deal, I was following the instructions from one of the
responders in the Tech Guy forum.(http://forums.techguy.org/t340182.html)

"Look in windows explorer for files called CommonName and/or a VBS
named HipCommon. if you find it, delete it and it should be better. if not
you may need to reinstall explorer
rrlr420
Senior Member"

As I recall, the Search found a CommonName file as well as several zip
files. I did delete it, but did not delete the CommonName files associated
with Norton Protected or the C:\Recyclers\... files. These files remain in
Explorer. I did not see nor do I now see CommonName in Add/Remove Programs.

4) I did all you suggested re: re-running HT and telling it to fix the
entries you indicated. I then did the "flush" for System Restore. The
problem did not go away. I then did the reboot into Safe MOde and scanned
with HT, saving and sending the log to the Tech Guy forum thread
http://forums.techguy.org/t339713.html
I have received a reply, but don't quite understand it. Perhaps you
could help me on this. I appreciate your expertise and willingness.

Also, since I was not provided with the Windows XP Home Edition CD when I
purchased
this computer, I have ordered the software. When I receive it, I will try
the sfc /scannow
and see if I can repair the affected Windows files.

Thanks.

associated with Norton Protected or the C:\Recyclers\... files. These

For the same reasons you 'flushed' System Restores, also delete the
CommonName files in Norton Protected and C:\Recyclers (and any in Windows
Recycle Bin).

In Re: Hotkey errors:

'C:\WINDOWS\mHotkey.exe' points to a Chicony Multimedia (keyboard) Driver or
Chicony Multimedia USB Driver. Do/did you have a Chicony Multimedia
keyboard installed on the machine?

If not, see if there's anything Chicony keyboard-related in Add/Remove
Programs and uninstall it. There are several workaround do delete
mHotkey.exe but try Add/Remove Programs first.

If you still use the Chicony keyboard but don't use any of its special keys
(http://castlecops.com/startuplist-568.html), we can disable mHotkey.exe to
see if it has anything to do with the "MS Visual C++ Runtime Library" error
(I doubt it).

The above notwithstanding, something else is causing those deleted HT
entries (including the 'R0...about:blank' entry) to reappear, and it's not
revealed in your Safe Mode HT log unfortunately.

By a Gentlemen's Agreement, as a rule we avoid working with HT logs and such
involved hijackings in the public newsgroups and this should be further
discussed/analyzed in a private forum. Unless Cybertech (who's very
experienced in these matters) or someone else wants to pursue it further in
http://forums.techguy.org/t339713.html, I suggest you begin a new thread
here: http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30. Make sure you've taken
care of all preliminaries here before you post:
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=4075 (Yes, update your tools and scan
again).

In that thread, reference your two threads at Tech Guy Forums and our thread
here (http://snipurl.com/dg8d).

Before you post to Aumha Forums, please run Sysclean per all of the
instructions here: http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=10610. Post the
appropriate sections of the Sysclean log to your Aumha thread, including a
new, post-Sysclean HT log generated in Safe Mode/ShowHiddenFiles
environment.

Cybertech is suggesting the creation of a new User Account (AKA Windows
Profile or Log-on) to see if the problems persist in it. (My guess is that
they would not, but I don't think ignoring the problem in the original User
Account and just using the new one is a good idea.)

If your comfortable doing so, formatting and reinstalling Windows is one way
to fix all problems. Though it's a heavy-handed fix, it may be the most
efficient for you, Art.
