Where are the icons

I have a new system with XP Home SP2.

There are no items on the desktop. In Explorer the desktop folder shows
icons, but they do not display.

What setting would cause this?

Install xp cd,exit the info page,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:Sfc /Scannow
When the graph is thru,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,then type:EXIT
Restart computer.Also,run the DOS window in min.,sometimes the graph
runs behind it.
 
No change. Thanks though. That's a handy one to know about.

Right click the desktop..arrange icons and make sure show icons is checked.
