Where are my own e-mai-accounts?

M

mccauleyt

Recently I noticed that I am unable to delete emails by just highlighting
them and clicking on the delete button. It is not reflective of the sender,
I may be able to delete some from a sender and not others. The only way
that I can delete these emails is to use the 'shift + delete' keys and
permanently delete them. As those of you who've gone looking for a deleted
email know, that isn't always the best way. My wife inadvertantly deleted
our whole inbox doing this one day.

Any suggestions? I have been unable to find anything on the microsoft
website relating to this problem.

Thanks,

Stuart

Deleted Items is probably corrupt. In the off chance that you are keeping
messages you want to save in Deleted Items, (a garbage pail), move them to a
local folder you create and then do the following.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for Deleted Items and delete it. A new
one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

What does your post have to do with the original discussion? Why did
you attempt to hijack a thread instead of starting your own new

It is a new post in WLM.

You are using Verizon? Vanguard is using GigaNews apparently. I'm using
MSNews and it is a new post. A server issue perhaps?

The reference line in this thread's original post on 'problems deleting
emails in OE6' shows the link back to Vanguard's own post to the email
accounts thread. So I can see how any server got that screwed up.
The link is there. Or am I reading this wrong?

I'm using MSNews. It's not a new post, and it's certainly not a server
issue! The dates of this thread (prior to the June 2 post) are May 25
through May 30. Chances are you're not looking at *any* posts that old!

My apologies.
You are correct. This thread was added to Where are my own e-mai-accounts?
I don't show it as your problem. You were about the 4th responder.
mccauleyt seems to have started the *new* thread.

1a. Move any messages that you want to keep out of Sent Items and Deleted
Items folders and into other local OE folders you've created for archiving
(saving) such messages.

1b. Move 99% of your messages in your Inbox folder to other local OE
folders, too.

2. Write down the location of your identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).

3. Close OE.

4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store folder, find & delete the
files Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx.

To avoid such problems in the future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

I see. I got rid of the original thread and since this one was changed and
didn't show as a reply, (Re:), is where I got it wrong.
