Where are Icons Stored?

A

AA Smith

I'm trying to locate some traditional Windows icons, like Home, etc.
However, under WinXP Pro SP2, I don't find the Home icon when I search the
entire hard drive to locate *.ICO files.

Where are those icons stored? Do they use a different suffix?

I shall greatly appreciate your help on this.

They can be stored in the DLL or EXE files.

Google icons you want to use, use an autorun.ini to replace drive
icons and properties of the icons to change icons.

use an autorun.ini to replace drive
icons and properties of the icons to change icons.

or...use an application like PE explorer ( http://www.pe-explorer.com/ ) to
view the contents of dll and exe files. With certain applications like this
you can 'swap' icons, AVI and gif animations.

most icons for win xp are stored in C:/windows/system32/shell32.dll
the best way to find the icons you want is to right click one, choose
properties > customize [tab] > change icon and the address box there
indicates where the original came from.
Not all icons will work this way, system folders (virtual folders) and HDD's
are some examples, this is why PE explorer comes in handy.

Hi, Brandon!

I appreciate your feedback. I find Shell32.dll, but I can't figure out how
to open it and access the icons. So, I'd appreciate a nudge in the right
direction.

"Freeware program to view icons. You can view all the icons that are
contained in an EXE, DLL, ICO, or ICL file, or you can view (at the
same time) all the icons that are contained in a directory."

Pennywise's suggestion is a good freebie, PE explorer is more advanced and
costs money. Both are good suggestions, choose your own course.

Another way just to see those icons in a DLL or exe (with windows) is to
right click a folder (any generic folder you created)
properties > customize [tab] > place file address ( ie; C:/windows/system32/shell32.dll) where it says "look for icons in this folder" and press enter.

Any icons in this file (DLL or EXE, ico etc) will show in the box below. you
can choose any one to replace the original icon.

Thanks, again, Brandon!

Though I hadn't said so, I was wanting to copy those icons into another
folder , so I could use them in the XP Web Buttons program which allows
users to load Icons and text into a web button. However, I don't seem to be
able to copy the icons from C:/windows/system32/shell32.dll. Apparently,
WinXP Pro won't allow that.

Any suggestions as to how I might overcome that restriction? Or where I can
get some Windows classic icons without paying a lot of $?

Sorry ...it's not PE explorer but "Resource Hacker". You could swap XP .ico
and avi's within the shell32.dll file, plant it in the original location
(after creating a backup) and never have to use the 'change icon' dialoge
again (for system icons anyway). It also works for your needs....
http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Its freeware and will rip any icon from any type of executable and DLL. You
also have the 'save as' dialogue which will help you.

free XP icons
http://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=648&LibID=2

good luck, also check the content for copyrights before you use use them on
your web page, usually a shout out to the creator on your site is all you
need.
