when windows create a restore point?

Hi

I read in a Ken Blake's old post that windows create a restore point daily.
I think that this is true when you shut down and restart your PC in a daily
basis. Otherwise (if you leave your PC open for days) windows can't create a
new restore point, until you restart or reboot.
Am I right?

Hi

System Restore will create a new checkpoint every 24 hours (default setting)
whether you reboot or not. If your PC is turned off for more than 24 hours
a new checkpoint will be created next time it is turned on. If your PC is
kept on permanently new checkpoints will still be created.

My desktop running XP Pro is never off and creates restore points daily.

Sorry, no. It doesn't matter whether you reboot or not. If
Windows can find idle time, it will create a restore point each
day.

Then, what does it mean the fact that some dates in windows restore calendar
aren't in bold?
For example, for the May the days 3, 14, 21 aren't in bold, so I can't
choose to go back to any of those points.

Either of two things: Windows wasn't running on those days or
there wasn't enough idle time to create a restore point.

for weeks at a time. I have to manually create a restore point in order to
get a recent one. And, Ken, there must be plenty of idle time over night
when the computer isn't even being used. Can you answer to that? My computer
has gone weeks at a time without creating a restore point.

I haven't turned it off from January, and my idle time (going to bed) is
idle for windows too!

(The three dates mentioned above is just the most recent example, since in
April the non-bold dates are more than ten).

Sorry, no I can't explain that. It hasn't happened in my
experience. Perhaps someone else here has a thought.

Just a thought here but would having an always on connection account for
it, ie: ISP pings.
