When viewing across network, file owner is blank

I'm trying to sync one computer (Desktop) with another (laptop). I went to
drag files from Desktop to Laptop and received the message I did not have
access. When browsing the desktop folder using My Network Places, some
files, especially the file that It looks like the failure was related to, I
see the file owner is blank. If I go to the desktop, the file owner looks
the same as the other files that sync just fine.

I'm stumped!

On a related note, some of the file owners are the guest account. How did
this happen? BTW, this does not apply to the file that it appears the error
was associated with...

All help appreciated.

Since it is not quite clear about your situation, let me assume:
1. You were working at the laptop and dragging files from the desktop to the
laptop.
2. You browsed the My Network Place at the laptop to the desktop to find out
that the file owner is blank.
3. Since you see the owner's properties, "Simple File Sharing" is turned off
and that the laptop and desktop are using XP (Home or Pro).

All the above factors may have different reasons for your question. Please
provide more information.
I guess the basic reason is about NTFS Permission on files. Check that on
the laptop to see if there is something wrong about permission. It is obvious
with No. 2. If you don't have permission, you cannot read owner's properties.

The reason why Guest account being the owner of some files is that
1. When "Simple File Sharing" is turned on, everyone connected to a XP box
uses the Guest account.
2. When "Simple File Sharing" is turned off, when you connect to a XP box
without a valid account, Guest account will be used.

Martin.

Thanks, and here is additional information...
Yes to #1 & #2.
Yes, I'm working from a laptop (XP Home) and Desktop (XP Pro). When
browsing, I'm using My Network Places from the Laptop to the Desktop.

Note of interest... The blank owner is on RANDOM (not all, or not all within
a particular time period) files from the days before the current network
configuration. The Guest are from files created during the current network
configuration.

I'm unfamiliar with the term "Simple Neworking", what do you mean? How do
I setup to have files created with the correct owner? How do I correct the
privledges on the files so I can sync them going forward?

Thanks... your assistance is appreciated!

Read the recommended URL before posting. Since the instructions said to
remove all but the following:
o File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Windows
o Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

and I am using WiFi network connection, I was reluctant to delete these:
o Qos Packet Scheduler
o AEGIS Protocol (IEEE 0802.1x) v2.3.1.7

Other than that, I completed the instructions without change. Files are
still being created under the guest account. I did not see definition for
"Simple Networking". I I did not see an explanation why some files, prior to
the point where they started being created under the guest account, show the
owner and others do not. Did not see how to correct the access problems to
those files with the blank ownership.
