V_R got my mind thinking when he posted the new ATI graphics card thread. I can't remember exactly when I bought by current PC, but it's probably about 2 years old now (P4 3.4Ghz HT, 2GB Ram, X800XT).

It does pretty much everything I ask of it, and although of course I'd like it to be faster I can't justify spending £500+ upgrading it quite yet. Bex's is even older... maybe 3.5 years old (P4 2.8, 1GB Ram, 9800), however that also does everything she is after - runs apps and the occasional game like HL2 fine.

My current thoughts are to upgrade just after the next big leap - perhaps once DX10 becomes mainstream. I imagine I'm going to get quite a shock when I compare the performance of my current PC and my next one

Hopefully, not until around January 2009. Have only recently built the two machines in my sig.

Have just ordered an AMD AM2 4000+ single core CPU for £57.50 though, it runs at 2.6Ghz.

When I built my AMD system I thought the 3800 CPU was the fastest AMD single core CPU available at 2.4Ghz, I didn't realise the 4000+ existed.

Hopefully I'll sell the 3800 for £30.00 which will offset costs (it costs around £48.00 + shipping new).

My last main system, based around a Socket A AMD 3200, 1Gb RAM, a DFI motherboard and 6800GT vid card, I kept for 2.5 years, I was very happy with that machine. Rush now has the video card and my Mum's machine has the rest of those parts.

That first one is certainly one beast of a PC - you'd think even in two years it would still be able to run pretty much anything. I'm very jealous of the RAID 0 raptors and graphics card - games must fly on those :D

Last upgrade for me was less than a month ago! So hopefully ill be happy for a while! :D

Having said that, i am maybe looking at getting a new vid card. But i an not in so much of a rush as the c2d etc has given my old card new life and all of a sudden i can play games with a marked improvement. Maybe the old system was holding back the 7900GTO a little...Or just that the cpu is better for games than the old 4800x2. Either way i is happy! :)

What's my next BIG upgrade ?

Well, I would like an OS and other software that can actually use the PC I have now ... properly.

do we have 64bit graphics cards yet ?

;)

next big upgrade will be to a quad or octo core system depending on the prices

prob wont be for a couple of years as my current system manages with everything fine and its only about 9months old, just need to get more HD space

When the new PC is delivered - it has been on order for the past three weeks, but due to a bit of a delay I don't expect it will be ready for another week or two. Still, it all adds to the anticipation

Oh dear :( Which company did you buy it from?

The wait for a pc to be delivered is very annoying...

Yes, agree with michael here.

A local computer shop or company should not keep you waiting that long, the very reason you go local is to get a good and speedy service.

You shouldn't have to wait several weeks or months for any computer component. It's unlikely current components would be out of stock that long and there are always substitutes.

What, exactly, is causing the delay?

Have you parted with any cash yet?

And who are these people?

I'm curious, and not a little suspicious.

My PC's under warranty so i should not do anything to it that could invalidate it!
Oh hang on it's a mess pc, they often tell customers to open the case up & have a fiddle inside!
Phew, that's OK then.

Hi Michael and Floppy, I ordered from PCSpecialist, who I think, are on Dr. Who time  (I did read the small print regarding this before buying, so knew that it probably wouldn't be very speedy.)

All delivery dates are estimated. Due to our broad range of components available, we do not guarantee any delivery date. If you have ordered a component on a pre-order only basis, it is more than likely that your order will exceed a 10 working day delivery date and could take over 1 month to arrive.

Because we are the manufacturers of your order, it is extremely difficult for us to guarantee or even estimate a delivery date for your order. Please understand that until you order is processed for you, your computer will not exist and this is why we cannot guarantee delivery dates.

Their current delivery schedule is shown as being 15-20 working-days, so technically, this would be day 16 since I ordered. I haven't been getting "antsy" yet because they haven't yet taken any cash - so I think they are just a bit laid-back..... well okay, slow.

I've been tracking the order, which has reached stage three in their order of doing things - i.e. it is now in "pre-production" (well... it would be, wouldn't it :wall: ) but if it doesn't get shifted into "In Building" within the next few days, I shall set the moggies on 'em :p

They have started to advertise in magazines now, by the way. They had the inner front two pages in a recent "Focus" mag.

Im hoping to get the x8800gts when my friend goes to shanghai, he knows someone who can tell him the best places to get hardware cheap :) Not sure what price yet though. I would get the gtx version but wont really fit in my case :(

I have a P4 2.6, 1gb ram, 9600pro downstairs which does anything asked of it really. Its an HP, but it has never put a foot wrong. I mean, I changed the ram, hard drive, graphics etc, but it is one relentless machine. Must be coming up to 4 or 5 years old now I suppose. Runs HL2 nad most games adequately so I'm not complaining.

My one is only about 10 months old, though I have only used it for 6. If I see a 939 dual core hanging about for less then a £100 then I may or may not bite the bullet and upgrade. But I am not planning to have a major overhaul for at least another year and a half, maybe 2.

Relocate your hard disk to the 5.25 bays and remove that caddy and it will. ;)

Like this one.

Thats what i nearly did myself. Then i got the Antec 900.

Just thought I would share... it seems I won't need to set the moggies on anyone after all :D (re my earlier post #12 in this thread) because I received an email from PCSpecialist this morning. The new PC has been built (whoopeee!) and just has to await "testing and configuration" so hopefully that shouldn't take too long :thumb: I know it's daft, but I have rampant "butterflies" going on now:nod: Having only ever used laptops over the past six years, it feels a bit like becoming a complete novice all over again

TC, your anxieties are a non-starter ... it's flutterbuys of excitement that have gripped you. :D

You will be pleased to know a PC is really a Big Brother to the laptop ... both have keyboards, screens, mouse and an operating system ... is it not true that once you learn how to ride a bike, one never really forgets ?

You are a particular intelligent young Lady, while I may be anticipating a few questions / inquiries being posted by you, I know that you will also find your own way, especially around Vista, as to how to accomplish any task.

Feel free to ask anyway ... there is no such thing as a silly question. :thumb:

:D

Your encouraging words are appreciated Mucks, thank you :D .... the difference I think I am going to notice most, is working at a warm (and in the case of the Rock - hot) keyboard! I'm actually looking forward to trying Vista
