when I try to bold one highlighted word the whole document changes

If I have a page of text, and I select one word or a small section of text,
when I select bold or underline or italics, it is changing the whoel document
not just the highlighted text. If I then press undo, it take the
bold/underline/italics off the text that I didn't originally select and only
keeps it on the text I actually asked for. Why has this just recently
started to happen and how might I be able to rectify it? I'm using Word 2003.

This started happening to me too, I managed to fix it but can't remember
how!!
Try Tools>Options> Edit tab and untick 'Use smart paragrah selection'
