When I select text to write over it doesn't delete when I type

When I'm working in word on one of the computers at my office it won't delete
the selected text when I try to type over what I selected. Instead it goes
to the start of my selection and inserts what I'm typing. How do I fix this
so it will get rid of what I've selected then put what I'm typing in it's
place?

Press the Insert key on your keyboard once.

(It's easy to touch accidentally when you're aiming for Backspace or
Delete.)

Also, it's _conceivable_ that the Option "Typing replaces selected
text" has gotten unchecked somehow, though that's unlikely. If the
Insert key doesn't fix it, look there.

What version of Word are you using? You probably have to turn off insert
option. For example in Word 07, you would click on the Office button in the
upper left corner and select WORD OPTIONS. From there just select ADVANCED
OPTIONS from the pane on the left and make sure "typing replaces selected
text" is checked underneath Editing options. If you have an older version
you can probably find this under Tools>options but I do not remember where
off the top fo my head.
