When I press <cr> "\" appears? How do I turn it off?

I know that I some how turned this feature on but I have no idea how to turn
it off. It happens in Word, Outlook and Quicken, I would appreciate any help.
 
Are you sure you aren't just seeing a pilcrow (¶)? It can look like a slash
in some fonts at low Zoom ratios. See
