when I open file picture and text show up as garbage.

Someone created a powerpoint file with text and graphics, then she opened up
the file and now graphics don't appear but have their placeholders and text
is also displayed as garbage. She mentioned that she downloaded graphics
from the web. Has anyone ever experienced this?
 
"text is also displayed as garbage" could mean a lot of different things.
What exactly is it doing?

Re the pictures, if you're using PPT 2003, go to Help|Check for Updates and
install the latest service pack for Office 2003. (SP1 actually fixed this
issue, so even that would be good.)
