When I email a word document why is it delivered in .DAT format?

I am having problems emailing Word documents. I send them in Word format, but
the recipient receives a .DAT format file and cannont open it. Can someone
please help me with this? Thank you

The main reason for this is sending email in Rich text format to a
non-Outlook user. Change your email format to either Plain Text or HTML and
see if that works.
