When did Flash become standard in XP?

Does anyone know what Windows version did Flash become a standard application
included in the operating system? Also, where can I see the timeline
evolution of all the Windows versions?

AFAK, Flash is not a standard part of XP. It's certainly easy to
download and install, and no doubt many pre-made systems come with it
already installed. But I don't think MS bundles it.

I *think* a Flash player was first included Windows 98 FE, or possibly with
the advent of IE5. Sorry, I don't have my test install of Win98 operating at

They answer would be never, it is not included in a purchased Windows OS, it
MAY be included on some OEM PC's such as HP, Dell, and so on.

Win 98 and 95, am I imagining things?

Thank you for your answer Tim. I was under the impression that Flash came
with XP, but I guess I was wrong. See, I was trying to determine how many of
my web users run Flash, but I guess I can't get that sort of info by their
operating system alone.

Do you know of a way?

Under Multimedia, it lists "Macromedia Shockwave Flash". I don't believe it
was included in any earlier Windows.

Note that Shockwave and Flash are two different technologies... When Win98
Components list "Macromedia Shockwave Flash", I'm not really sure what that
means.

Anyway, like I said, I'll have the chance to figure it out while I'm doing
all these installs. I'll flag this thread and come back in a week or so, or
less, depending on the weather. It's nice and cloudy today, so I have to
work on outside projects. When it gets hot again, I'll have more time for
computers.

Even if Windows does include some sort of Flash player, that doesn't mean it
will handle your Flash files properly. You need more info, like version
number. You'd do best to ask in Flash forums at Adobe.com for how to code
this stuff, and even about what's included in Windows, for that matter.

Flash is not included with the install of Windows XP. Just because lots
of sites require it *if* you want to see their Flash content has nothing
to do with it being a requirement of the OS. It is not required by the
OS. It is required by whatever content YOU choose to view.

More likely it is the Adobe Reader (used to be called Adobe Acrobat
Reader) that you had to install soon after a fresh Windows install. It
wasn't that Microsoft required it but instead lots of drivers,
utilities, or applications that you installed immediately afterward had
..pdf docs for their manuals.

Oops, meant to say that Flash is not *required* with an install of
Windows anymore than an install of Windows requires you to install the
Solitaire game. I don't bother installing fluffware that I won't be
using. I never bothered installing Flash simply because what came with
the OS would already be an old version, so if I needed it (because some
site I visit requires it) then I'd get the latest version from
Macromedia's web site (now owned by Adobe).
