when a file window is open....

When I open a file, at the top of the window vista starts to do something
and a green bar slides to the right. Apperantly vista is cheking or indexing
something I guess.

However, I have stopped the index service from the services.

Then what is vista busy with every time I open a file?

The green progression bar just tells you that Vista is reading the folder
contents.

It sounds to me like the real problem is your computer's performance. Take a
