What's your CPU temp?

V

Vic Dura

I'm running Everest Home Edition freeware to check my cpu temp. It's
running at about 97F at the end of the day. I was wondering what
others are running? If you use cpu temp monitoring software would you
kindly report here what your temp is at leas 1/2 hour after turning on
the computer?

Thanks

I can't answer your other question since I leave mine on all the time.
However there are so many factors that affect the temperature of the
computer. There is the ambient room temperature, CPU type, air flow,
heat sink/fan combo, etc. I believe if you can keep it under 45C that
is good.

109 F at the moment but it is irrelevant as there are too many factors
affecting temp...processor, ambient temp, activity, etc. The time that
the computer has been on is immaterial...what bumps the temp is computer
activity.

The CPU temp can vary up to overheating in a matter of
seconds. 97f is pretty low if the CPU is busy. I have seen
my current AMD Athlon 2600+ at 155f. That is acceptable for
the short term according to AMD's charts. That was also at
burn-in torture testing. Normal temp are in the 125-140f
range.

35°C (96°F) at around 30 minutes.

Vic Dura, 9/13/2005,
Thanks to all for the comments. I've a good idea now as to what temps
to expect under what conditions.

Running Motherboard Monitor 5. Athlon XP 2400+. My CPU temp reached as
high as 91C, over the maximum specified by AMD. Then I removed the
heatsink/fan that came with the retail box version of the CPU, and put on a
Masscool copper HSF that I bought at Newegg. Voila! CPU temp down to 41C.
(Right now at 45C, ambient temp a little high right now.)

Moral, I guess, is monitor that temperature! The heatsink grease apparently
deteriorates over time, and therefore the CPU cooling deteriorates as well.

This is more a hardware issue, not freeware, but I did mention MBM 5, which
when I last checked was freeware.

How did you get the heat sink off? I thought they we glued on pretty
solidly.

My bundled AMD heat sink fan came with one of those thermal pads on the
bottom. From what I understand, they are made of paraffin wax. Anyway, the
function is to fill in the microscopic "peaks and valleys" between the CPU
and the heat sink, so that heat can be transferred, but no more. That's why
the layer is supposed to be thin. And it's not supposed to be an adhesive.

When I removed the HSF, the heat sink came apart from the CPU immediately
.... the material looked dry and crumbly. To get it off, you use something
like Isopropyl Alchohol ... but nothing oil-based.

I was concerned that I didn't do a good job of spread a thin layer of
heatsink grease over the CPU core, but I guess I did well enough, consdering
that the temp came down so dramatically.

Does anyone has experience with this kind of software ? If you tweak the
fan speed this might just kill your HD, I imagine

Sure, lots of people

It isn't so much tweaking it as monitoring it...reducing speed when temp
is low, increasing as necessary. But on many systems, fan speed control
isn't possible or needed, most software coolers simply use the "halt"
instruction for the CPU...disabling it when it isn't needed.
