what's wrong with my taskbar

I am using windows xp.
since yesterday, the tasks disappeared from the taskbar. I have to use
alt-tab to go through the tasks. It's such a pain.
Quick Launch is still there, Notification Area is also there on the
taskbar. I can even bring out the language bar and other tool bars by
right clicking the blank space on taskbar. But the tasks are not shown
there anymore.
Could anybody help me out please?
