What's up with all the pop ups lately?

This works-go into admin tools in control panel. Click
services-then disable Messenger.

Good luck,

Disabling the messenger service only stops messenger service popup ads from
appearing, not any other kind of popups. Also disabling only hides the real
problem of open NetBIOS ports. These are the ports the spammers use.
Installing and enabling a good firewall is the only correct solution to stop
messenger service popup ads.

I agree with you, but sometimes a properly configured
firewall with AV, and a good ad-blocker program isn't
enough. I blocked the NetBIOS ports on my computer (135,
137-139, 445 & 593), plus run Ad-aware, google pop up
blocker and I still got the messenger pop ups. Those were
the only ones that showed up, trying to sell me software
for this problem. I finally had to turn off messenger,
even though I didn't want to, to get this to stop. I also,
have up to date AV and all the critical patches, but some
feel if you get these pop ups you must be lax in some
way... But I can't figure out how, or when I was lax, when
I have had all these precautions in place since the first
day I turned on my computer. Anyway, turning off "net
send" did solve the problem, and since I don't use this
feature for anything else--not on a corporate network--I
shouldn't miss it! Just wanted to let you know that there
are some people who follow "all" the precautions that are
published, and still have the problem.

If you still get Messenger Service pop-ups, your firewall is not blocking
properly. If the ports are blocked the popups can't get in and you won't
see them.

You may think you have a good firewall and have configured it correctly, but
if you get the messenger service ads, it is ONLY because the ports are still
open. That is the only way to get them. If this is the case then either your
firewall is not configured correctly or it just plain stinks. Zone Alarm
will block the correct ports(and the ads) by default. I suggested installing
zone alarm and ditch your current firewall.

Hi Pam - You need to recheck your firewall for proper operation, and also
add the UDP ports in the range of 1026-1029, since it will also use one (the
first available) of these.

Greetings --

Please stop posting potentially harmful advice.

Disabling the messenger service is a "head in the sand" approach
to computer security.

The real problem is _not_ the messenger service pop-ups; they're
actually providing a useful service by acting as a security alert. The
true problem is the unsecured computer, and you're only
advice, however well-intended, was to turn off the warnings. How is
this helpful?

Equivalent Scenario: You over-exert your shoulder at work or
play, causing bursitis. After weeks of annoying and sometimes
excruciating pain whenever you try to reach over your head, you go to
a doctor and say, while demonstrating the motion, "Doc, it hurts when
I do this." The doctor, being as helpful as you are, replies, "Well,
don't do that."

The only true way to secure the PC, short of disconnecting it from
the Internet, is to install and *properly* configure a firewall; just
installing one and letting it's default settings handle things is no
good. Unfortunately, this does require one to learn a little bit more
about using a computer than used to be necessary.

Dear Bruce...
I thank you kindly for all your sound and heartfelt
advice. This spyware and pop up issue has really been a
bother. I have downloaded SPYBOT yesterday and it did
remove several threats of spyware and that seemed to
eliminate a lot of junk e-mail...however, Tho I did
download and install a trial program of: Pop-Up stopper
pro... it still allows some to interfere with my internet
browsing, etc...such pop ups as Tool bar ads, a thing
called COUNTER? and something about a banner?, and just
junkware mainly. I have seen a few of the messenger pop
ups..(I think) that you mentioned, as they are like the
install boxes asking for your permission to install a
certian program you've downloaded but were not actually
downloaded by me, but I just thought them to be pesty pop
ups as well. Do I not go to Windows update for that type
of install?
I'm fairly new to computers, so please don't think little
of me for such small knowledge in this area.
Thank you again Bruce.
You have been so kind and wonderful.
Be Blessed...
