What's the function of folder subscription in MS Outlook 2003

When I check the folder list in my imap account on MS Outlook 2003, I
see a distinction between subscribed and unsubscribed folders.
I would like Outlook to update automatically only my inbox folder, but
I would like to see my complete list of folders. I would like to
initiate an update in a non-inbox folder by opening this folder.
How do I do it?
I tried to unsubscribe from my non-inbox folders, but the list keeps
being updated automatically.
Why is it so?

That's Outlook's default behavior. Outlook will not populate the IMAP cache
until you actually view a folder.

Thanks.
If so, why does Outlook keep two identical folder list - "all" and
"subscribed"?

Where do you see these lists? I just checked my IMAP account and I find no
"all" and "subscribed" lists.
