What's the desktop follow-on to Win2K?

Without getting into the religious argument about Win2K vs. WinXP,
what's the {professional, office, business} follow-on to Win2K for
desktops (that isn't XP)? Is there going to be a Win2003 for
non-servers?

Thanks!

I don't know the answer, but I will give you a guess that is worth what you
are paying for it.

MSFT seems to be intent on making Win2K truly professional, that is, only
for servers. IMO they would merge the Win2K strengths with a later version
of Win XP Pro. Or maybe just use the next version of Win XP Pro.

No more plain vanilla Win 2K Pro upgrade path is my guess.

----------------------------

Not to provoke a "religious argument," but would you care to elaborate on
your implied objection(s) to Win XP? It seems friendly enough, although I
use Win 2K pro at home.

It seems to me that there should be a way that IT folks and private
individuals could install Windows Super Newbie (or whatever they call the
next version) so they could have as many Win XP toys (desktop themes, e.g.)
as they wanted, or wanted to absolutely forbid. Best of both worlds, eh?

Microsoft's roadmap for desktops is....

Windows 2000 -> Windows XP -> Longhorn

Servers is....

Windows 2000 -> Windows 2003 -> Longhorn (most likely will be released a
year after the desktop version since servers take longer to mature)

/neo

ps - longhorn is a codename/alias. it will not be the final name of the
product.

The current path for home users is:
Windows 95/98/98SE/ME - Dos based
Windows XP Home Edition SP1a - NT based, version 5.1

The current path for desktops is:
Windows NT Workstation SP6a+SRP - version 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional SP4 - version 5.0
Windows XP Professional SP1a - version 5.1

The path for servers is:
Windows NT Server SP6a+SRP - version 4.0
Windows 2000 Server SP4 - version 5.0
Windows Server 2003 - version 5.2

Greetings --

The current successor to Win2K Pro is WinXP Pro. The next
Microsoft desktop/client operation system, code-named "Longhorn," is
currently in development, but won't be ready for quite a while. (I
"guesstimate" at least another two years.)
