What's the advantage of Windows Defender?

Is it absolutely necessary to have other virus protection software when you
have protection already built into Windows and from the ISP? Is it really
necessary to buy those other virus protection packages??

Although I agree with your point, I'm a belt and suspenders kind of
guy. Yes, you can largely avoid malware by practicing safe hex. But
none of us is perfect, and if we are tired, upset, in a hurry, etc.
it's very easy to let our guard down. My stance is that one should use
all the software protection available, but not simply rely on it.

Moreover, not everyone knows enough to protect himself without
software. Especially for people like that (and that's probably the
great majority of people) such software is essential.

Yes.

Do you leave your car unlocked because there's a car guard? Do you
leave your house unlocked because you have the police to protect you?
Is it really necessary to buy those other virus protection packages??

No, because good free av is available. Use that instead.

The day your ISP and/or Windows vendor are committed to full
restitution for an unbounded set of consequent damages you may suffer
as the result of malware, is the day you can "leave it to Beaver".

That depends. I've been doing fine without all kinds of anti-whatever
products for years. That doesn't mean you could. On the other hand, if
you need them to constantly protect you, you should maybe reconsider
what you're doing.

One of the most frequent comments we get (at work) when we tell a user that
they're infected is "But I've got the antivirus and antispyware installed!"

All the protection in the world won't help you if you bypass it's
safeguards. I use Windows Defender and it's never found a thing on my
systems - but then again, I rarely get a virus on my system, and haven't been
infected since 1991 (knock on wood!).

The most common threats that we see are:
1) email - even your momma can send you a virus. Scan it all!
2) Ads - clicking on them can give permission for the bad stuff to install
itself. Close the process in Task Manager to avoid clicking on the wrong
thing.
3) Downloads (music, videos, porn, etc). If you must download, never
select "Run" or "Open" - always select "Save" and then scan it with your
antivirus and antispyware tools BEFORE opening it. If it's infected, delete
it and then empty the Recycle Bin!

Defender scans for spyware - but since the line between viruses and spyware
is blurred, there will be some overlap between antivirus and antispyware
programs.

I can't see any reason. I run SpySweeper w/AV. I finally turned WD off
and the system seems to run a *LOT* faster....

Windows Defender does help to protect your computer from spyware as well as
help to manage the startup program. Too many programs run during the startup
could slow down the overall systems performance. However, if you have a
third-party anti-spyware program installed, it is recommend to turn off the
windows defender and use the other one.

Try:

Also, have you looked in the event logs? If you are having trouble
booting, try booting into Safe Mode..
