Whats preventing connect?

Computer has XP Pro. Service is SBC with a static gateway IP number
(69.216.XXX.XXX) and also an assignable range of IP numbers. I set up a
user name and password on this computer. This is only one computer - not a
network. I want to connect to this computer from home.

There is also a netopia router with it's IP address too.

On this (client) computer, I checked box that allows others to connect to
it.

On the remote computer, I will be connecting via a dialup line. I created a
remote connection on the remote machine. Name is the gateway IP number
69.216.XXX.XXX. Experience is 56k. Put in names and password. Left Domain
blank. Tried to connect and timed out.

Am I missing some step somewhere?
Thanks

Did you forward/open TCP Port 3389 through the router to the private LAN IP of the PC your trying to
connect to?

Hi Al.

No I didn't. Is this port number the port remote connection uses and looks
for? Is it the same on different computers? (a Microsoft default?) I have
followed the basic MS KB articles on turning remote connect on on the client
and then configuring the remote to look for it. Is there a KB on anything
related to the open Port needed?
Thanks much.

That is the port required by Remote Desktop (ie. Terminal Services) and Remote Assistance... If its
not open then the connection will fail.

That can be changed if needed...

You have to reboot the PC once you make the registry change...
