What's gone wrong with 'Update'?

My windows/microsoft Update Utility no longer automatically installs any
updates.

They are successfully downloaded but the installation fails and is not
logged in the update history so I have no idea what is happening.

This began happening a week or so ago and does not coincide with any change
I have made to the computer .

I have carefully checked that I have the right services enabled and that the
ie settings are all as they should be.

Last week I couldn't even GET to the Update site beacause I couldn't install
KB892130-a new version of the WGA validation tool-.

Eventually I tracked it down to its SoftWare Distribution Folder and ran it
from there. (and yes ...I DO have a genuine copy!)-but surely we don't now
have to do this every time we recieve a download? I thought they just
autoinstalled?

Curiously......All but one of my friends and colleagues are having similar
problems.#

Any Ideas??

Thank You.

The WGA diagnostic tool has been updated to correct a problem
seen by some users. Please download and execute it from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try it again.

Thanks Carey..did as you suggested but it did not correct the problem.
The problem is not that I can't run the Validation tool or Download
updates.....it is that the downloads fail to INSTALL and I can't work out why.
thanks again
