What's could be wrong with my monitor

P

Pat

Hi,

When I switch on my LCD monitor the screen appears for less than a second
then goes blank. I can see a dimmed image of whichever program is running
and I can just about see the mouse move across the screen. This problem
just suddenly appeared and I cannot explain it. Luckily I have two monitors
running so that the good one can close down the computer. Even though they
are very faint to view adjusting the screen setting has no effect.

Anything can be done to salvage this monitor.

Pat

P.S. unfortunately it is outside the warranty.

Something is shutting down the backlight. I'd say it is the backlight
itself, were it not for the fact that the screen DOES appear briefly
when you turn it on, so I am guessing either a fault in the inverter (the
power supply which provides the high voltage for the backlight
tubes), or else the monitor is mistakenly entering a power-save
mode and shutting the backlight down. Neither of these is something
you're likely going to be able to fix yourself.

Not quite. It should be noted that backlight replacement, if this
involves replacement of the CCFL tubes themselves, often is
required to be performed under at least moderate-clean-room
conditions. I wouldn't recommend that the average user attempt
that particular sort of repair.

Level 2 and 3 are clearly beyond anyone's capabilities, save an
authorized and properly-equipped repair center.
