freeware firewall

Firewalls are only part of computer protection, virii are detected by
virus programs.
If you are already infected, you will need to close down > System
Restore .

System Restore option in Windows Me/XP
http://www.augustana.ab.ca/other/cns/virus/
http://www.adamtj.org/repository/howto/W32.Blaster.Worm/
Users of Windows Me and Windows XP should temporarily turn off System
Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by
default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become
damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System
Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from
modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools
cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result,
System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file onto
your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from
all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder
even though you have removed the threat.

For instructions on how to turn off System Restore, read your Windows
documentation, or one of the following articles:

Best????

This depends a lot on your skill at setting up programs ( options etc
) & your own computer.
If you run into trouble, let us know.
Here is an online test of how secure your computer is.

Online - The PCman's FREE Virus Scanner Test

Test your Virus Protection online see if your scanner detects the
test string. This test virus was developed by the European Institute
for Computer Anti-Virus Research (EICAR). This is just a test it is
NOT a real virus but a harmless string of characters. This string is
used to verify the effectiveness of your virus scanning software. If
your virus scanner is set up and working properly it should
intercept the downloading of these files. Free virus scanner test.
NOTE: Even if your scanner detects this string be sure to update your
virus signatures to the latest available.

Off topic: I have a question about what you've written about system
restore. It sounds like you are saying that when avast finds a virus
in my system restore files and reports that it has safely moved it to
the chest it hasn't really done anything to the virus file. Is this the
case?

Those comments were for Bat- Man, for him to know he has a virus,
possibly means he has some form of protection, therefore I'm
guessing the virii are still in System Restore .

If Avast still finds virii in your System Restore, you will need to
follow the proceedure as per my links. If it dos'nt find any virii,
you are clean.

I set my System Restore to minimum on the drive XP is on & all
other partitions or drives, are turned off.
