Whats a good audio solution?

Looking for recomendations for a sound system. I have on-board 5.1
(Intel D865 mobo), but need some good speakers, but the sound from the
mobo isn't too loud, so I'm looking for some powered speakers or an
amp. An amp that sits in a drive bay would be real nice. Any leads?

Virtually all 'PC' speaker systems are powered.

An inexpensive stereo set of speakers (plus woofer). Shipping might take a
while, but the price is low as it gets (be sure to check free budget
shipping).

Whatever you get, just make sure you do get the sub woofer (I guess that's
the .1 part of x.1). I don't play loud music, the base helps produce
natural sounds.

If you want 5.1 sound, I cannot help specifically. Shop around, there are
some great online stores for computer parts.

I didn't realize that. Even in 5.1 systems all speakers are powered? I
using crappy left/right powered with the volume control in the right
speaker. 5.1s work the same?

Well, they work the same in that there's an amplifier for the speakers.

The amplifier is usually in one of the speaker boxes, or a control unit,
with the other speakers cabled to it.

Similar, I'm sure, as your 'crappy' stereo set. The one with the power cord
(or wall transformer input) and volume/balance(if included) controls
contains the amp with the other being a bare speaker 2-wire cabled to it.

Sometimes they put an amp in each speaker cabinet (might do so if they want
a local volume control at the speaker) so then audio and power to the amp
goes through the connecting cable.

There are other ways, and it depends on their particular design, but
there's an amp for each speaker somewhere.

Thanks. I looked at a set from Logitek: 280 watts total. Thanks for
your help! My 15 yr old will love the christmas present.
