What would cause a mouse to act like this?

Hi Guys,
This is driving me crazy.
I'm using win XP Home. I have loaded all latest drivers for several
mice, only one installed at a time, and they all do the same thing.
There are no conflicts in Device Manager
This is with both optical mice and ball mice but all USB
Connecting either to the PC or to a 4 port hub makes no difference.

Here's what happens.
The mouse can be working perfectly for 30 seconds and then it freezes
up. 15 seconds later, it starts working again, then it freezes, then it
works etc, etc, etc.
It's exactly the same with all the mice I have tried.
Any clues?
Cheers,
Steve

Not a mouse problem but could be a PC CPU over-utilization thanx to adware/spyware or otgher
malware.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

* * * Please report back your results * * *

Cheers Dave,
I'll give it a try but I can tell you now that my AV and spyware stuff
is always kept bang up to date.
I'll report back later.
Cheers,
Steve

Please define "...my AV and spyware stuff...".

What vendors and what versions ?

Hi again,
I use AVG software for Anti-virus.
Adaware SE Personal
Spybot search and destroy
Trendmicro scans my PC every few days

I have just done complete scans (Clean)with all of them and nothing has
changed.
I have noticed that CTRL ALT DEL opens the task manager but there is no
option to view the CPU or memory usage as there used to be.
BTW, this PC is a P4 @ 3.06Ghz and 1 gig ram

If my guess is correct, you accidentally double clicked on the frame
surrounding the field you were currently in (i.e. Applications tab). Just
double click the empty area to the left of the "End Task" button

if your preformance tab is missing then i think there is something not quite
right, i know you can remove the users tab if you mess about with the
autologon thing .....

anyway, go to the CTRL-ALT-DEL and look at the processes tab and when your
mouse freezes look in the CPU columb and you might notice some program using
your CPU in there thats causing this .... im sure ive had this before a
while ago and i was something to do with outpost firewall ... maybe sygate
.... neither of which i use anymore

Well, I double clicked on the space to the left of "End Task" and got
all the other stuff back so at least I can check the CPU usage when it
happens.
Currently only using 3% of CPU.
Thanks for that

Not a problem. :) How much physical RAM does the Task Manager say you're
using?
Also,do you have a firewall installed, and if not, are you at least behind a
router?

Hi, There is the ZoneAlarm firewall AND connected to the Internet via a
US Robotics router.
At the moment, the PC is using 174meg of ram out of a possible 1024.

Video drivers can cause this problem too.. ensure that you have the latest
driver installed

OK, Now it's starting to get weird on me.
I downloaded the latest drivers for my video card from Nvidia and
deleted the existing driver files as told to by the Nvidia help pages.
When I tried to install the new driver, I got a message with 3 buttons,
Cancel, Continue and Retry. This was followed by another message saying
that there wasn't enough hard drive space to unpack the driver and that
I needed to free up 38meg of space on drive C...... Hello!!... there is
76 GIG of free space on drive C.
It turned into a fiasco of clicking retry on the 2nd message and
continue on the first over and over again.
The upshot being that no proper driver files are installed for the
video card now.
Anyway, it's 3:36am here and I'm off to bed.
Thanks, guys.

Your computer has way more issues than a freezing mouse.. personally, I do
not think the mouse is a problem in itself.. I would consider that the mouse
is being affected by something else..

If you have a genuine XP CD, consider doing a repair install..

I think that is a good assessment.

Hi guys.
It IS a genuine XP CD so I'll give that a try.
Thank you.
(I may be gone some time, lol)

I'm just curious but how many computers has that mouse worked with recently?
