What will the next Windows be?

A

Al Smith

The time for me to get a new computer is approaching.

When will the next version of Windows be out?

How significant will the next version be?
The difference between Win98 and XP was huge.
Is it not reasonable to expect that the difference between
XP and the next version to be similar to the difference
between Win 95 and Win 98?

Al;
The next major version is Longhorn due most likely 2006.

There will likely be "Windows XP Reloaded" possibly next year.
Reloaded is mostly Windows XP with all Service Packs and maybe some
minor changes.

Longhorn is 2 years out so waiting is usually impractical, Reloaded
may not be worth upgrading.

well don't take too much stock in this but i read somewhere on msn that the new windows is due i think in 2006. if i remember correctly it is supposed to be quite different from even xp. there were some high expectations of it but that remains to be seen. let's just hope it's not like win me.

The next version is due next year. I've seen and used an alpha version and
it's nothing to shout about. Looks like another mistake like ME was. Runs
very slow and requires a powerful pc to run it. Minimum specs:

800Mhz CPU
256Mb RAM
32Mb video RAM (3D accelerated)

Propbably going to be called XP second edition. There was a write up in
Computer Shopper 2 months ago and there doesn't seem to be much reason to
upgrade from XP.

Not much reason unless you like programming it would seem. It will support
XML. Good for developers.

that is what i was afraid of. win me was the nightmare on gates street. if it's anything like that, i'll stick with xp.

The next major release will be what is currently code-named
"Lonhorn" (that won't be the name it's released under). No
official announcement has been made as to its release date, but
most estimates are that it won't be before 2006.

There's also an intermediate version of Windows XP coming out
sooner (next year?) That's being called "Windows XP Reloaded,"
but that too will probably not be what it will be called when
released.

How significant will the next version be?

Longhorn will be a *major* change, "Reloaded" much less so.

The difference between Win98 and XP was huge.

Yes, but that's not a fair comparison. XP was not an upgrade to
the Windows 9X line, but to the Windows NT line. In fact, Windows
XP (really NT 5.1) was the successor to Windows 2000 (NT 5.0).
Differences between 2000 and XP were relatively minor.

Is it not reasonable to expect that the difference between
XP and the next version to be similar to the difference
between Win 95 and Win 98?

No. Differences between 95 and 98 were relatively minor. The
change from XP to Longhorn is expected to be much greater.

To get back to your first statement ("the time for me to get a
new computer is approaching"), if you're asking whether to get it
now or wait, the answer is to get it now if you need it now. If
you are considering waiting for a new operating system, realize
that there's *always* a new operating system on the horizon; if
you put yourself in the position of waiting for it, you end up
waiting forever.

If you have the Alpha legally then you will understand WHY IT DOES NOT RUN
WELL AT THE MOMENT. It is called Pre-Beta software.

Not only that, it will be 2007 or 8 before the Longhorn OS becomes
user-stable. I just transfered from 2000 to XP and am amazed at the bugs
still left after nearly 3 years.

Nothing happened. It's still expected this summer. But a service
pack is *not* a new release, which is what Al's question was
about.

That's just speculation on your part. Nobody knows that. I'd be
very surprised if you were right.

I couldn't disagree more with that point of view. Sure, *all*
software except the trivial has bugs. That's just a fact of life.
But there are major bugs and there are minor bugs. My experience,
and that of everyone else I know using XP has been that it has
very few major bugs, and has been the most stable version of
Windows since the first day it was released.

Of course. If it ran well, if it didn't have problems, it would
be released already.

Nobody should ever make judgments about the quality of a piece of
software based on a beta or earlier version of it.

Then tell me why the boot process freezes if external USB2 hard drives are
not powered on? They must be. That wasn't true in 2000. To me that is a
MAJOR BUG.

Sounds like the second movie at the Drive-In after 2Fast2Furious.

Too funny! I sure hope they have a better name when it comes time to
release it.
