I have received a file that I cannot open. It ends with .docm and I don't

DOCM file is a Microsoft Office Word 2007 Document with macros. Office Open
XML (commonly abbreviated as OOXML) is a new file format specification for
the storage of electronic documents such as memos, reports, books,
spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents.

As Tom says docm is a Word 2007 macro enabled document (as opposed to docx
which is a macro free Word 2007 document). To open such documents with
earlier Word versions, you need the 2007 compatibility pack -
