What should be running?

Hi When I press ctrl alt del and get a list of processes running how can I
tell what each one does and if it is necessary. I.E what do alg.exe and
lsass.exe do for instance.

I just found out that I have msblast.exe on my computer and yet I downloaded
the upgrade from Microsoft yesterday.

I have found google very helpful in finding out what various programs do.
Just type in the name do a search and there are usually several articles of
each that you can use to piece together the information.

I'm not going to advise you about shutting down processes, on the
grounds that if you have to ask, you don't want to fiddle with them.

On the other hand, your comment that you downloaded the patch yet you
have found the worm indicates that the worm was there _before_ you
downloaded the patch and/or that you don't understand that the patch has
nothing whatsoever to do with removing the worm, only with preventing it
in the first place.

Three sites that I use frequently to consult with re services and processes
are as follows:
1. Black Viper: http://www.blkviper.com/index.html
2. The Elder Geek: http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm#Services
3. Not sure of author :

Hope that helps.
