What services need to be available?

I am setting up a wireless network with a router and although everything
seems fine including IP n numbers, etc, the PCs cannot see each other. I am
now suspicious that early on, before having this wireless LAN, I may have
turned off some service essential to networking under XP.

Can someone list what services need to be "on" for networking to work under
XP?

Thanks.
