What program splits, cut or convert DVD movies

Does someone knows a good program (if possible freeware)
to do the next tasks from a DVD movie (VOB)

Converting sound to MP3
Converting parts of the movie to AVI

I already tried;
BeSweet (end always with an empty log file)
Smart Video Converter (does not handle VOB files)
VCDcut (mostly hanging or not working files)
DVDcut Stream (half working and needs payment)

I've Windows XP and installed DviX & Lame encoder.
