What program installed these keys?

Hi,

I have no clue about these keys:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
directory in the registry, there is a directory called
OptionalComponents.
Inside the OptionalComponents folder are 3 folders:
IMAIL
MAPI
MSFS

What program installed these keys?

I'm running XP Home SP2, Office 2003 Full, Outlook
Express 6.

Anyone can help? I'll appreciate. Thanks

DSteele

MSFS could have something to do with Microsoft Flight Simulator.. Mapi is an
interface that Windows use to connect to mail servers.. imail maybe Internet
mail..

No doubt somebody will correct me if I am wrong..

Hi,

This is common depending on which email client you are using. Generally
speaking when I clean a system because of spyware, etc.....that key
(OptionalComponents) is the first to go, without repercussion. As a test,
you can export it first. That said, run this combo while at it:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

These keys had been installed either by WinXP itself, or by MS Office
(can't say more exact -- I have Office installed at all the computers I
watch).

These keys are not shown under start up list.

Hi Mikhail,

They are not listed under msconfig/startup only under a subkey via run.
They are not listed on any of my five systems here, all having MS Office
installed. I have only run across this cleaning infected systems.

Thank you Kelly. I often run these programs (except
Hijack This) and perform full HD scans, it is always
clean. I have no viruses, always practice safe computing.
I suspect these are traces from previous uninstalled
programs and I'm just wondering where they came from...

Yes, they are listed only under Run/OptionalComponents
subkey on regedit. Msconfig/startup tab, doesn't show
anything.

Yes, Kelly: like "DSteele" says, they are only in the Registry -- but not
anywhere in the startup items more.

I mentioned them long time ago, and see at every computer I watch. Computers are
clean for sure: no viruses, no adware (you do recall, I think, that hate all
this stuff and can clean up computer manually. Even the unknown viruses: about a
half of a dozen from this menagerie I sent to AV companies myself -- and they
were included in the nearest bases updates).
