What prevents Vista from creating restore points automatically?

Hi,
I have Sony Vaio VGN-TZ 150N with Vista Business. Since the very first days
of its existence it did not create a signle restore point automatically, I
have to do it manually whenever I remind myself of it. I have the feature
turned on to create restore points on my c drive. I have also Kaspersky
Internet Security 7 installed since some time, before I had Norton Internet
Security as trial version came preinstalled on my computer. But as before a
now, restore points are not created automatically.
Anyone willing to help me figure out what to do to fix it?

Daissy,

One possibility is a background program that is running continuously. The
restore point is only created if the machine is idle as initially
configured.

If you check Task Scheduler, Microsoft/Windows/System Restore conditions
tab, you will find 'start the task only if idle.....'

Also if restore points are not created via software installation or system
changes within 24 hours - Vista creates a System Checkpoint restore point -
it must be 24 hrs of "running" time.

I changed System Restore conditions and unchecked 'start the task only if
idle.....' but it did not help. I checked event viewer and I get ASR writer
Error 0x80070037 from Volume Shadow Copy Service everytime the system attemps
to create a restore point. I copy below the errors I get. I f you know any
solution to that or if you are aware of any hotfix for that, pls let me know.

Do you have UAC turned off?
Have you taken possession of files structures that formally belonged to the
system?
Have you changed permissions on files and structures (registry) the formally
belonged to the system?

Changes that result in a system configuration that Microsoft programs are
expecting can result in those programs not being able to run.

I am unable to glean any additional hints from the error messages you found,
hopefully someone with more experience may be able to get a clue from them.
(that is the right information to forward, I just don't see the needle that
is in there ;) )

To confirm: you can manually create a restore point? Have you actually
restored from one of those restore points?

Task Schedular (Local)/Task Schedular Library/
Microsoft/Windows/SystemRestore
you can right click the SR task and select 'run' which should start it up.
Does it run successfully that way?
(Last run result should be The operation completed successfully)

BARELY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS:)

MAYBE HAVE SOME INFLUENCE AS IT DEALS WITH FILES ENCRYPTION, AUTOMATIC

I CAN MANUALLY CREATE RESTORE POINTS BUT I DID NOT TRY YET TO RESTORE FROM
ONE.

Daissy,
Your additional information doesn't show me any problems yet.

Try this,
start orb
restore
(should get a drop down list of programs, select 'Backup and Restore
Center')
in left pane select 'Create a restore point or change settings'
you should get a 'System Properties' window
The list in Automatic restore points should show the various drives on your
system. Local Disk (C:)(System) should be listed and it should be checked.
Along side that should be the most recent restore point for each disk(s).


Just as a check the system needs at least 300 MB free on the drive, which
should not be a problem but you should check that also.

Hi Michael,


I have 33 GB free on my C drive which is checked for creating restore
points. And the last restore point is the one I created manually 2 weeks
ago:) I guess I will need to get used to the idea that it does not work
automatically on my computer...

Well, also no automatic system restore point will be made if the computer is
always busy, it needs to be idle to start the process.
You could check for computer activity by
Start orb
reliability and performance monitor

the starting view is of four graphs, the left one shows cpu usage, if usage
shows more than a few percent when you are not doing anything then some
process is keeping the computer busy - I have been told that some screen
savers will also hold the machine 'busy'

I do not know just exactly what constitutes 'idle', for me I once had a
background task running that was part of a global molecular folding program,
it kept machine busy, no restore points made.

I tried before with that one as well. I changed the options in task scheduler
so it starts the process even if computer is not idle but that did not help
neither:( I am giving up on that.

Whats "start orb"? I tried that at the command line or in the start/run box,
and it isn't recognized as a valid computer program or command. Is it an
acronym?

No. It's not a command, it's a thing. The start orb is that circular
thing with the multicolored flag on it, at the leftmost position of
the Task Bar (assuming that your Task Bar is at its default position
at the bottom of the screen. It's what you click to get the start
menu.
