What makes WOL work?

Using Windows XP Home. Tthe computer is setup for WOL - it's enabled in the
BIOS and in Windows under Device Manager/NIC ("Allow this device to bring the
computer out of standby"). I put the computer in Standby then try to access
a file on it from another computer. I expect it to "wake up" so I can access
the file, but it doesn't.

Is something other than just trying access a file required to wake up the
computer?

Does the computer have to be in Stand By for this to work, or will it work
in Hibernate as well?

Mike,

If the BIOS supports Wake On LAN, and WOL is enabled in the BIOS settings, it
will bring the computer online even if it is powered off.

Mike,

The articles listed indicate you have to send a "magic packet" to actually
wake up the computer. That sounds like more than just trying to access a
file on the computer. I assume I need one of the utilities that are
referenced in those articles to send this "magic packet?" If so, any
recommendations?

Mike,

Depending upon what NIC you have, I can't say if one utility or the other will
work better. Most of the utilities are free, so give one a shot. You have
nothing to lose but your time.

Hi
A Lot of people confuse WOL and Waking from suspend mode.
I just wanted to clarify, since the Hardware demands are not the same.
