What is "&" used for??

It is the concatenation operator - used for joining text together,
like:

="The winner is "&A1

String concatenation.

You can get a description of operators by entering "operator" in the
search field for Excel Help (2003), then clicking on "About
calculation operators", then "Types of operators".
