I wanted to know what all programs I was running at
startup so I went to start/run/typed msconfig and clicked
startup tab. I have 15 items listed for startup. Most of
them are for Symantec and my internet provider, one is
for Adobe Acrobat which I don't know if I need for
startup. There is one I don't know what it is. It is
called tp4mon.exe Does anyone know what this is?

acrotray.exe - used by Acrobat Distiller (printers folder) to create PDF
documents, leave it running, else you won't be able to create PDF documents
from Word, Excel, Photoshop, etc

tp4mon.exe - IBM PS/2 TrackPoint Application - for the trackpoint mouse,
obviously you need to leave this running too

Thanks. Guess the 15 that I have will just have to stay
where they are and now I know what tp4mon.exe is for too.

You DON'T need to leave tp4mon.exe running; that will not
effect your mouse or it's operation. That is just a
useless startup program placed in your startup tray to
access properties, etc for the mouse that you can access
from the control panel. And most of that junk from
symantec can probably be turned off as well except for
the auto scan.

wrong - tp4mon.exe is NOT a system tray applet, that is a separate
application. tp4mon.exe is required for trackpoint device parameters to be
set from the Mouse applet in the Control Panel, it creates a TrackPoint tab
on the Mouse Properties dialogue. it is required for normal operation of
the trackpoint device

The mouse I use is a Memorex scroll pro mice series
(taken right off CD for mouse). It is a MX4200. I didn't
think this was a trackpoint mouse. At one time I had
Microsoft Intellipoint 5 installed on computer, but found
I didn't use it so uninstalled it. Would installing the
Intellipoint have put this tp4mon.exe on my startup? I am
just going to leave it there, but was just wondering
where it came from.

is this a portable computer we're talking about here? i assumed it was.

This is an IBM thinkpad laptop computer so yes I assume
it is portable.

they you see that little 'nipple' b/w the G H B keys on your thinkpad's
keyboard (probably red or green in colour)? that is the trackpoint device,
aka, built-in mouse. you must have used it, right?
