What is the "windows xp media center" os????

What is the winxp media center os? It is what hp installs onto their low cost
computers. Cannot find any info on the differences between the winxp pro, home
or media-center versions.

I've tried the microsoft website & there is no response to any mouse click
selection using the firefox browser under winxp pro; when in linux, the nearly
the same inaccessibility in m$'s site using firefox (did find that I was allowed
to download the m$ ie browser).

Has microsoft decided to disallow non-ie browsers for access? Did read that the
vista os version will not allow disabling ie browser as default but not sure if
vista will allow install or use other internet browsers.

Did see Ballmer on CNN a few weeks back claiming that "unlike other companies,
m$ *enables* the user to do what they want on their computer". m$ lies again
& again.

I didnt have a problem with the Media Center - the reason why I
re-installed XP Pro was because
- the factory build of my new laptop had plenty of software which was
awkward to un-install

it also had a time-restricted version of Norton Anti-virus which kept
on prompting me to buy on-line even when I wasnt connected to the
internet and similarly for MS Office.

I dont know why these factory installs contain AOL and other useless
software.

Unfortunately uninstalling the factory build has caused more problems
than it solved

Then you clearly have not looked.

WinXP Media Center Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does
_everything_ WinXP Pro can do (except join a domain), plus contains
additional multi-media features) of WinXP Pro.

Windows XP Media Center Edition Home

Then you have something wrong with your Firefox and Linux
installations; I've never had (or heard of anyone else having) such
problems. The only parts of the Microsoft site where Firefox/Linux
might not work properly (but certainly won't freeze) are those few pages
using ActiveX controls.

Has microsoft decided to disallow non-ie browsers for access?

Nope. You installation is hosed.

Did read that the
vista os version will not allow disabling ie browser as default but not sure if

Read where? Any source that might be considered reliable?

That has nothing to do with the operating system, and everything to do
with the way the computer manufacturer bundled crapware into the
purchase. If you didn't want the additional software, you could easily
have purchased a different computer, from a different manufacturer.
Take the issue up with the OEM.

it also had a time-restricted version of Norton Anti-virus which kept
on prompting me to buy on-line even when I wasnt connected to the
internet and similarly for MS Office.

Again, these situations are entirely the responsibility of the computer
manufacturer, and not the OS.

Because AOL and the other crapware manufacturers pay the computer
manufacturer to include them.

Unfortunately uninstalling the factory build has caused more problems
than it solved

This is often the case, which is why I won't buy a factory-installed
OS. Ever. The OEMs bundle too much crap in to make the few dollars
saved worth my time to clear out.

Becaue the OEM's are paid X amount of money to install on each PC they
sell.

Forgot to mention that I'm also using Sun's java 1.6.
Nope. You installation is hosed.

Maybe & maybe not. I've also disabled remote access & remote update of my
registry services. Have since found that using the drop-down menu, I can
get access to the areas whereas the links on the page still just
grinds & stops without doing anything that I can see.

Since it was in another newsgroup, the source is probably unreliable;
will find out when vista is released.

Thanks for the info on winxp media-center; it will do if it has everything
xp pro has except for joining a domain.
