What is the red "X" in the small box?

Windows XP and Outlook Express: Occasionally am unable to view an email photo or photo on web page, instead there is a small rectangle with a red "X" in the upper left corner. Since I performed an Application Recovery recently, I also am unable to open some music downloads (like those sent with ecards). Instead of a red "X" I see a small rectangle with three colored dots. Does anyone know what settings need to be changed to remedy this problem? (Or maybe I shouldn't change a thing, since I haven't had a single pop-up since the Application Recovery either!).

Go to search at microsoft,type:macromedia Click on the shockwave text,
install shockwave player,then locate downloads,install flash player.
