What is the point of "Safely remove hardware" icon?

Hot-Swappable means you aren't required to power off the PC to remove or
insert the device. "Fried" is a generic term implying that the device
may no longer function properly after some occurrence. Power
interruptions during a write will cause "fried". "safely remove
hardware" prevents "fried".
 
Neccesary in Win 2000 only....can cause blue screen if device not
stopped.( have seen this happen)

win98se with drivers ....no problem.
Win XP ..... no problem
