folder from the win98 machine am I asked for password

the message appear on the win98 machine.

any ideas how I can set this password etc... I want to bypass that message

Hello,

Just to check - have you done this:

In XP computer, enable Simple File Sharing by going to Folder Options
=> View and checking the box 'Use simple file sharing'.

Hello,

Hello again Jeff,

OK, here's the full-meal-deal just to check you've done all this.
Sorry if this is all too boring and beneath you:

On the Windows 98 computer

*Set up Network access*

Go to Control Panel => Network

In the 'Primary Network Logon' dialog box select 'Client for Microsoft
Networks'

Click the 'File and Print Sharing' button and check the box "I want to
be able to give ..."

Click the 'Identification' tab. Enter a unique Computer name and a
common Workgroup name (note that the Workgroup name is case-
sensitive).
The Workgroup name would be identical to the Workgroup name in the XP
computer.

*Set a password*

Go to Control Panel => Passwords

In the 'Change Passwords' tab click the 'Change Windows Password'
button and set a logon password.

Restart the computer to check that all is OK so far. You should get a
logon window showing your Computer name and asking for a password. If
you haven't been logging on to a network previously, in Outlook
Express you will be asked to re-enter your user password.

*Set up Shared Folders*

You can authorize any folder for network sharing. Or, you can create a
separate folder and use this as your shared folder (name it 'Shared').
Either way, right-click on the folder, select Properties; click the
Sharing tab, and click the Shared As radio button. Set up the folder
the way you want: Read only; Full access, passworded or not. Full
access allows others on the network to add/modify/delete files to/from
this folder. You can drag/drop/copy/move/create shortcuts to/ files to
this folder.

Check that your shared folder(s) are showing in Explorer (My
Computer) / Network under your username.

On the Windows XP computer:

In Windows XP SP2 make sure that the Windows Internet Connection
Firewall is disabled.

In Windows XP make sure that the Computer Browser, Server, and
Workstation services are set at Automatic and Started (Start => Run =>
and type in "services.msc" {without the quotes}).

Jeff

there you said something important:
"make sure both computers are in same workgroup"

The machines are not on the same workgroup. Infact winxp (it is Pro with
sp2) is on a active directory domain and win98 is on a workgroup (not member
of any domain)

I think I must take my winxp off the domain and put in the same workgroup as
the win98 machine. If not the win98 machine can be added to the domain too..
not sure adding the the win98 to the domain is possible.. When I created the
AD I selected it not to be compatible with pre windows2000 etc

any suggestions?

If this is a work laptop/computer don't take it off the domain! If you
do you will not be able to log back on to the computer unless you use a
Local Administrator account and you will not be able to log back on to
the domain unless the machine is re-joined to the domain by the Domain
Administrator. There are other ways to share workgroup resources with
computers that are members of a domain! If it is an old machine that
you acquired from a company you can disjoin the domain but you need to
be able to log on to a Local Administrator account to do this.
