For an antivirus solution I can recommend both Avast! (www.avast.com) and
AVG (www.grisoft.com). I also see some people recommending H+BEDV AntiVir,
especially for old/outdated computers, but I'm not too crazy about it
personally.

Sygate has this loopback problem

If you use proxomitron, webwasher, Privoxy ,some antiviruses/spamfilters
etc, Stay away from Sygate.
