What is the best way to protect data?

With XP Pro, can I restrict access to certain folders or should I encrypt folders or files. How would I do either. Currently, I have compressed folders w/ private files and added the encryption but I am not happy that I have to uncropress the folder to access the file and I am not sure if this is safe.
 
Well actually, there's a multitude of freeware on the net that can either restrict access to files or encrypt them, and you won't have to go through the sometimes confusing XP processes. Go to download.com or zdnet.com/downloads and navigate through the categories, they'll be under "utilities" for www.zdnet.com/downloads and "utilities and drivers" for www.download.co

Oh, and by the way, the band Creed rocks.
