what is "System" process?

i made this post earlier (at 12:36) and another person is
having the same problem. does anyone know what this
process does? it just started doing this a few reboots
ago. thank you.

a process "System" (not System Idle) is using 80-90% of
my system resources. what is this? should i be worried
about it? my cpu time is being eaten up like crazy
 
thanks. any idea why it just started doing this? my CPU
usage is now always above 90% and i really don't think
windows xp needs all that processing.

Idealy, you want your CPU to be used 100% of the time when running your
favourite apps.
